SKILL CENTRE – SPRING ACADEMY

2025/2026: PLAYERS BORN 2013 to 2016

The Skill Centre offers U10 – U13 players a focused and supportive environment to develop strong technical skills and deepen their understanding of the game.

Following Canada Soccer’s Grassroots Standards, the program prioritizes individual skill development while introducing tactical concepts, including positioning, movement, and decision-making. Players are encouraged to be creative, confident on the ball, and adaptable to different game situations.

Training is led by qualified coaches who challenge players to think, problem-solve, and express themselves on the field. While there are no weekly league games, players have opportunities to test their skills in interclub festivals and friendly matches.

At WIA, we follow the Canada Soccer Grassroots Standards, which means players in U10 – U13 train in development-based groups rather than fixed, traditional teams. Groups are intentionally small (6–8 players) and are formed based on each child’s individual needs — not on team assignment, division, or perceived “tier.”

This approach is designed to:

  • Focus on the development of each player
  • Maximize touches, repetition, and confidence-building moments
  • Delay selection and tiering until players are older
  • Create training environments that allow all players to grow at their own pace

Training groups and game day teams may be made up of teammates, mixed-age players, or a blend of both — whatever best supports each child’s development at that time. These groups are not permanent; the Technical Lead is responsible for adjusting them throughout the season as players grow and their needs evolve.

Match-day rosters are also flexible at these ages. Rostering decisions are based on:

  • A player’s development needs
  • Providing an appropriate challenge
  • Ensuring we field competitive teams
  • Supporting confidence and enjoyment

Because we are a small club, families may see some consistency week-to-week, but nothing is “final.” Coaches review player progress continuously and adjust groups and rosters as needed.

We understand that players may compare themselves to teammates or feel unsure when groupings change. Please reassure your child that:

  • They are valued
  • They are not being moved “up” or “down.”
  • Coaches recognize their effort and growth
  • Movement between groups is normal and based on development
  • Decisions are made to support their long-term success and enjoyment

Our goal is to create a training environment where every player feels supported, challenged, and excited to come to the field.
